JUST IN: 'Residents living within a mile of the train derailment site who have not yet left their homes are asked to immediately evacuate due to the potential of a major explosion,' Gov. DeWine said.
EAST PALESTINE, Ohio --
Governor DeWine activated the Ohio National Guard around 8 p.m. Sunday to assist local authorities at the scene. Officials continued on Sunday to monitor the environmental impact caused by Friday's derailed train carrying hazardous materials. The crash that led to a large inferno that continues to burn, evacuations, a shelter-in-place order and concerns about air quality.
Ten of those cars derailed, including five that were carrying vinyl chloride, the NTSB said in a statement Saturday. The agency said so far it had "not confirmed vinyl chloride has been released other than from the pressure release devices."
