"The state has enough problems to face up to without adding to them," an anonymous member of the commission, which was appointed by segregationist Gov. John Bell Williams , told the Associated Press. She said that among TV executives, "there was sort of this general feeling that kids would watch anything that looks like it's for kids, and they didn't want to spend a lot of money."
But first they had to hear about it. Ganz Cooney stationed outreach coordinators in different parts of the country to make sure the show was recognizable and accessible to as many children as possible.
