Hundreds of volunteers conducted the annual count of the Houston area's homeless...

by helping people secure housing. Houston and Harris County added $100 million last January to the funds they were channeling into efforts to reduce homelessness.

But in the intervening year, the cost of living soared and eviction protections which kept many housed — in the throes of the pandemic have drawn to an end. And as the rental market picked up steam, it became more difficult to find landlords willing to deal with the paperwork and inspections required for homeless housing programs.

Jackie Urbina and Jack Marsh, outreach workers with the Coalition for the Homeless, were among the more than 400 volunteers who hit the streets this week to find out whether efforts to move people into housing have outpaced the rate at which people are losing their homes. Results from the count, which in Houston also involves an optional questionnaire, generally take weeks to process and should become available in the spring.

The duo then got back in their car and drove until they met a veteran who had been homeless since leaving the service in 1988. And a man who became homeless after exiting prison and who loved to read but had just lost his glasses. Then a woman who wrote books, but had become homeless after being trafficked as a sex worker.could — a drink of coffee, a visit from a friend in Veterans Affairs.
