A humanitarian crisis is unfolding off the coast of Florida as migrants from Cuba and Haiti continue to take to the sea in a desperate effort to reach the United States.
Since October, Customs and Border Protection's Miami sector has responded to more than 250 migrants landings — a 350% increase over the same time last year.
Many migrants are coming from Cuba and Haiti in hopes of escaping political persecution, a further crumbling economy, poverty, hunger and gang violence. Apollony, who has a 4-year-old son, said he once encountered a young child on one of the boats who was terrified.Many of the boats are made of anything that might float. Adam Hoffner, division chief for U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Miami operations, said they often are ill-equipped to handle the voyage.
