Federal officials said the number of migrants taken into custody on the southern border has decreased significantly since President Biden expanded special programs this month allowing migrants to apply to come to the United States legally.

Officials touted the success of the programs, which direct migrants to apply online and have a sponsor in the United States instead of trying

“These expanded border enforcement measures are working,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement. “It is incomprehensible that some states who stand to benefit from these highly effective enforcement measures are seeking to block them and cause more irregular migration at our southern border.

Under the programs, migrants must have a U.S. sponsor willing to support them financially, pass security background checks and pay their own airfare to the United States. Once they arrive, they can stay for up to two years and apply for a work permit and potentially, asylum, if they are fleeing persecution. Anyone who crosses the border illegally is disqualified from the program and could be expelled to Mexico.The U.S.
