ERCOT has launched a dashboard showing the grid system’s current capacity, or power supply, and demand using real-time data as well as a six-day forecast of projected capacity and demand.On the heels of an ice storm that left hundreds of thousands without power, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas announced a new dashboard that lets Texans check out upcoming grid conditions.
The dashboard shows ERCOT’s current capacity, or power supply, and demand using real-time data as well as a six-day forecast of projected capacity and demand. The forecast is based on hourly forecasts and “other best-available sources,” ERCOT said in a news release. “Like an extended weather forecast, the new 6-Day Forecast dashboard provides an indication of future conditions on the grid for 6 days beyond the current operating day,” said Dan Woodfin, ERCOT vice president of system operations. “While the Supply and Demand forecasts may change, as weather forecasts do, the dashboard provides a general ‘heads-up.’”
The announcement comes as utilities continue working to restore power to thousands of Texans after this week’s ice storm. As of Saturday evening, more than 100,000 homes and businesses were still without power, most of them in a region extending from Hays County northeast to Freestone County. For many, the power problems revived memories of the 2021 blackouts in the wake of Winter Storm Uri. Hundreds died after the Texas grid came close to collapsing because of a lack of generation. That wasn’t the issue this time around — the grid maintained sufficient reserves but falling trees and iced-over power lines caused outages across the state.
