Dr. Zohre Sادات Sang Sefidi, in an interview with ISNA, emphasized the importance of nutrition in patients with HIV . She stated that proper nutrition can improve the immune system, maintain weight and muscle mass, prevent nutritional deficiencies, reduce the risk of secondary diseases, and enhance the therapeutic effects of medications. She added that fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which are essential for immune function and protection.
Therefore, she recommends that patients consume a variety of fruits and vegetables daily. Sang Sefidi, referring to the weight loss in HIV patients, continued: Increasing the number of meals while reducing the volume of each meal, consuming high-calorie and high-protein foods like lean meat, eggs, whole grains, nuts, and moderate use of vegetable oils are some effective ways to manage weight. She explained that the body uses protein to build muscle and strengthen the immune system. Protein-rich foods include lean red meat, chicken, fish, eggs, milk and dairy products, legumes, and nuts. Patients should consume adequate amounts of protein sources daily. In cases of weight loss or being in the late stage of HIV, patients should consume more protein. Sang Sefidi continued: Carbohydrates are the most important source of energy for the body. Carbohydrates found in whole grains like brown rice, whole wheat bread, barley, and legumes are considered good food sources. Whole grains are rich in B vitamins and fiber, which can help with immune function. This nutrition and dietetics specialist also stated that in people with HIV, the risk of heart problems increases after chemotherapy. Moreover, excessive consumption of sugar and salt increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, she recommends that patients limit their daily intake of sugar and salt. She added that fat helps provide energy to the body. However, excessive consumption of fats, especially saturated and trans fats, can increase the risk of diseases such as cardiovascular disease
